This is my very favorite show. B.M. has absolutely kept me going throughout this election. I do feel like he’s a misogynist which takes away a little from the fact that I totally adore him. Anyway, this is from last night’s show. The clip is a little long, and not the funniest ever, but I love the very end line … so true. I don’t know about y’all but I’m ready to put this country back together again. This was the. best. election. ever. but our country has gotten so fucked over the past 8 years that it’s hard to even know where to begin. I hope the G.O.P. doesn’t try to play defense for the next 4 years and actually HELPS.
Even more interesting to me is … what becomes of the GOP now? So strange … within the past 15 years, that party has undergone such a weird change. I remember when the Republicans were the wealthy party of “big business.” I was always taught that rich people were republicans because Republicans didn’t want rich people to share with poor people. O.K., maybe a bit simplistic, but I do think that, in theory, that was what the Republican party stood for. Small government, fiscally conservative, etc. Most of the Republicans that I knew were NOT very socially conservative. Not anymore. Somehow, the GOP now seems to stand for, as Maher always says, the “know nothing” party. Which is true. Scarily religious people who are undereducated, if educated at all, don’t seem to believe in science, and think legislating morality is the number one concern. I wonder what the “old” Republicans are doing now? I can’t imagine people like my friend, Sharon, who was really the ONLY Republican I knew at Smith feeling comfortable in this party. There’s a sort of mean-spirited “mob mentality” in that party. When McCain gave his concession speech and mentioned our next President, the audience booed. They actually fucking booed. Didn’t see it? It’s right here:
And that’s not standard in every election. No one booed Bush at the Kerrey concession speech. And if you think that Dems were happy that Bush was coming back for 4 more years, think again. I didn’t agree with the GOP but I used to respect them. Now, I just feel disgusted with them. It’s like the worst of this country all united and called themselves Republicans. I believe what the GOP is going through now is somewhat akin to what happened to the Dems after the 1960s when we had to kick out all the racist Southern “Democratic” Congressmen and redefine our party. And I don’t think we even STARTED to be able to do that until Clinton. Now, I think the party is finally getting itself back together. 40 years later. I have a feeling that the GOP is going to have to undergo this same “retooling”, if you will.
In spite of all of this, I think Obama WILL win over this country. All of the country. Including those “real Americans” who live in small towns as opposed to the 80% of us who live in cities. I think he IS a unifier and will prove that be enacting the legislation that an overwhelming majority of people voted for.
Do I think that Obama is perfect? No way … as Flamy has pointed out below, he has certainly made his own share of gaffes, as I think every President does. However, as Maher suggested last night, at this point, we could really host a gameshow called “Something Else Sarah Palin Doesn’t Know.” It’s one thing to be a “regular” Joe or Jane; it’s another to be purposely ignorant and feel proud of that.
